Posted in Habitat For Humanity | 41 comments

Watch a Habitat for Humanity build in action! This family of 8 received a Habitat Home in Sangamon County (Springfield, Illinois) in 2008 through the hard work and tireless dedication of over 300 volunteers! This is the largest home our volunteers have ever built – but with 7 children, they sure needed the space! Just to pull at your heartstrings a bit, and to reinforce why we do what we do, here’s a little background on what made this build, this family, so special. •Homeowner: Patricia “Patty” Redpath, is a 48yr old Social Worker Sangamon Area Special Education for past 10 years; Masters degree. •Single Mother of 7 adopted children (all children born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and/or a drug-related Dependency) •7 children: 4 fight depression, 6 are ADHD, 2 have attachment issues with 1 requiring a separate bedroom as a result •This family of 8 lived in a small trailer in a trailer park, no room for adequate living, let alone studying, relaxing and safety from less-than-desirable neighborhood lifestyles (drugs, domestic abuse, poverty, theft, etc.) •Despite their disabilities and income disadvantages, all of the Redpath kids are in swimming, soccer and baseball; 2 in scholastic bowl; all have beyond HS goals (some college, some tech school) Current Living Conditions when Patty entered the Home Ownership Program: She owned her own mobile home/trailer in a rented trailer community; poverty-saturated neighborhood is no longer safe…drug houses, domestic abuse issues

The Bloomington Bros. get creative.
